Rain Delay? No Problem: The Rainy Tournament Survival Kit

There is nothing quite like leaving home with clear skies and arriving at the ballfield just in time for the clouds to roll in. Tournament weather has a mind of its own, and after enough long weekends at the field, you learn that a little preparation can make a huge difference.

I like to keep a few rainy-day essentials ready during baseball and softball season so we’re not scrambling when the first drops start falling.

  1. A good umbrella
This one seems obvious—until it’s sitting at home. Keep a sturdy umbrella in the car or tournament wagon so you’re ready when the weather changes between games.

  2. A lightweight rain jacket
Look for something packable that doesn’t take up half your bag. It’s much easier to keep cheering when you aren’t sitting in wet clothes for the next three hours.

  3. A comfortable stadium seat
Wet metal bleachers are nobody’s idea of fun. A portable stadium seat gives you some separation from the wet bleachers and makes those long delays much more comfortable.

  4. A cozy blanket
Tournament mornings can already be chilly, and rain can make them feel even colder. A blanket is great for staying warm between innings—and you’ll probably be glad you packed it even if the rain never comes.

  5. Hot coffee in a good tumbler
Because sometimes the weather forecast calls for a 100% chance of coffee. ☕ A hot drink makes an early, wet game day considerably more tolerable.

  6. Patience—and plenty of it
This may be the most important thing in the bag. Rain delays, muddy cleats, schedule changes and the inevitable “Are we playing yet?” are all part of tournament life.

The Ballfield Mom Tip 🎀
Keep your rain gear together instead of gathering it before every tournament. When the forecast changes at the last minute, you can grab it and go.

Be ready. Stay dry. Keep cheering.

I’ve gathered some of my favorite rainy-day game essentials in one place so you don’t have to hunt for them.
